CLUB HISTORY
The New Haven Skating Club, Inc. was founded ninety-one
years ago, in 1912, and is the second oldest figure skating club in the
United States. Originally it was a closed club, open to only a few
selected individuals. Gradually others were invited to join and in
subsequent years its membership has been opened to all those who enjoy
the sport of figure skating.
Through the years, the New Haven Skating Club has
been the sponsor of many important competitions in the history of skating
in the United States. The first international championships ever
to be held in America were hosted by the New Haven Skating Club in the
year 1914. In 1921, the United States Figure Skating Association
was founded and the New Haven Skating Club became one of its charter members.
The first National Championships under the auspices of the USFSA were held
in New Haven in February 1923, and again in 1927 and 1928. New Haven
entered many skaters in these competitions, and they took top honors for
their club. By 1930, the New Haven Skating Club was recognized as
one of the leading figure skating clubs in the United States. The
1930’s also saw the beginning of the Annual Carnival. This extravaganza
attracted world-renowned champions including twice Olympic champion Sonja
Henie, five-time World champion Karl Schafer, and Olympic champion Roger
F. Turner of the United States.
The National Championships were hosted in New Haven
again in 1933 and 1935. The war years had their effect on skating
in New Haven and its great social era was past. The Club has since
retained its high level of figure skating and is well represented by its
skaters in competitions throughout the United States.
